Exchange 2013 – Move mailbox database – Blog

When creating new databases within Exchange 2013, the default location may be on the C drive. This could cause an issue because most operating systems are also on the C drive, and this could cause issues when Exchange decides to create an abundance of log files which could fill up the C drive rather quickly.

Follow these simple steps to resolve this issue with the Outlook Forms. This can be done under the user’s profile, and does not need administrative privileges. Proceed with caution when working with the Registry Editor on your PC. Follow the instructions carefully so you do not accidentally remove the wrong key.
A good practice is to have the operating system on the C drive, and all Exchange mailbox databases residing on another partition.

I am going to walk you through how to use Exchange Management Shell to move the database from the C drive to the D drive.

1. Run Exchange Management Shell AS ADMINISTRATOR

2. Locate the path of your existing database that you would like to move. If you do not know the path, run this command in the Exchange Management Shell: Get-MailboxDatabase -Status | select edbfilepath

3. Now that you know the path of the existing database, run the following command in
Exchange Management Shell. – Be aware, this will dismount the database during the
move, and once completed, it will remount. You may want to do this after hours to avoid
disruption to your users. Change C:SpecifyNewLocationDBname.edb to be your new path and
the name of your database as well as the location you want the log files to go to. Be
sure the new location has ample space to accommodate the likelihood of growing log files.
“DatabaseName” is the actual friendly name of the database as it shows in the Exchange
Admin Center. This does not include “.edb” at the end.

Move-Databasepath “DatabaseName” –EdbFilepath “C:SpecifyNewlocationDBname.edb” –LogFolderpath “C:SpecifyNewlocation”

4. After the command is finished running, run the following command again to verify it has moved to the new location successfully: Get-MailboxDatabase -Status | select edbfilepath
